Last
week we received the sad news that Mrs. Barbara A. Barth from Massachusetts
has passed away. Barbara was working on a genealogical book about the
Dorland family in America, assisted by Mrs. Judy Cassidy. We had the
pleasure of corresponding with her and assisting her with some matters
regarding the Dutch Dorlands. Barbara's wish to have the book published
before her death unfortunately did not come true. Her children however
have taken up the tremendous task of completing their mothers work,
for which we are truly grateful.
Below
the message the family forwarded to us:
Barbara
Aileen Sullivan Barth died peacefully on April 23, 2003, in the company
of her family. Barbara was born August 30, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York,
daughter of the late Theodore Green Sullivan, Jr. and Frances Louise
Hoeg Sullivan. She was predeceased by her loving husband Richard Gertzen
Barth, with whom she lived and worked side by side as a freelance commercial
artist from their home in Southfield, MA. She enjoyed gardening and
was a member of the Rock Garden Society. She was an accomplished genealogist,
having had her research and writings published. She was an active member
of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of long standing
in the United Church of New Marlboro in Southfield. Barbara is survived
by her two sisters, Trudy Sherry of N. Carolina and Frances West of
California; as well as her five children: Richard (Jeff), his wife Charlotte
and their children Lindsey and Ian; Aileen, her husband Albert Bond
of Nantucket, MA; Diane, her husband Frederick Swartz and their children
Samantha and Collin of Sandisfield, MA; Brian, his wife Rebecca and
their daughter Hannah of Washington, MA; and Bruce, his wife Rita and
children Hannah and Connor of California. A memorial service in celebration
of Barbara’s life will be held at the United Church of New Marlboro
in Southfield on Saturday, April 26th, 2003, at 1:00 P.M.
We
wish her family and loved ones much strenght to carry this sad loss.

For some
time now we have been working on a full siteupdate. Some of the alterations
are already visable, such as the new backgrounds (the English version
of the site now got its own distinctive colour) and also the American
genealogical data have been added. At the moment we are busy creating
a photoarchive and updating genealogical data, so if you have sent us
supplements and/or modifications: please have a little more patience,
we will include them for sure. The next couple of weeks we will be in
the Utrecht Archives as well, to track down some records and to photograph
original documentation, which will appear on this site shortly after.
So there is lots in stall! If you have sent us an email to keep you
informed on updates, we will send you such notice when there are major
alterations. We will not bother you with minor modifications.

Princess
Ange married in Sibbe (The Netherlands)
Sibbe-
There
was not much interest when John van Dorland (32) and Ange Compaoré
(30) recently had their church wedding in Sibbe. Some friends, acquaintances,
family members and a hand full of villagers populated the church. Still,
this was not just an ordinary wedding. Ange is after all a Princess
from African 'Burkina Faso'.

Today
sad news has reached us. Mr. Arend Datema, chairman
of the Arend Datema Institute – Archive and Information Centre
(AIC) for the Betuwe, has suddenly passed away. Many of you will remember
Mr. Datema as the person who performed the official presentation of
the family book (last year in Ingen, The Netherlands), with so much
enthusiasm and dedication. Arend Datema took part in
the completion of the book. It was at the AIC in Kesteren that most
part of the genealogical data concerning the Betuwe offshoot of the
family was retrieved. With his enormous historical knowledge and on
his own very unique way, Datema has always supported us with both advice
and action. He was also the one who managed to stimulate us time and
time again to publish all the genealogical data. Arend Datema reached
the age of 72 years. We wish his familythe
strength to carry this tremendous loss.

Supplement:
On page 73 of the book it says that Gerrit van Dorland
got married on May 10th 1949 with Hendrika van Tintelen
[1575]. Hendrika van Tintelen [1575] is a daughter
of Dirk Jan van Tintelen and Janna Hovestadt.
(Dirk Jan (Djerk) van Tintelen was born on may 13th
1892 in Maurik, a town close to Ingen. Janna Hovestadt
(born October 9th 1890 in Dodewaard) is a daughter of Johannes
Hovestadt and Antonia Laset. Johannes
Hovestadt, clerk, (born in 1852 in Dodewaard and deceased in
1919) is mentioned several times in the book as witness or bearer of
a birth or death concerning the Van Dorland family (for instance on
pages 144 and 148). Also mentioned as a witness or bearer of several
Van Dorlands (see page 144 etc) is mentioned: Josua Hovestadt,
secretary (possibly at the town hall at Dodewaard), born in 1820 or
1821; presumably he is the father of Johannes Hovestadt.
The Hovestadts possibly had close ties with the Van Dorlands at Hien
and Dodewaard. Read
more about the Hovestadt-Van
Dorland connection. (In Dutch)
